We use JWST (James Webb Telescope) to take pictures for our background
The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a large, space-based observatory developed as a collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). Here are some key details about the JWST:
Purpose: The primary goal of JWST is to observe the universe in infrared wavelengths. It aims to study every phase in the history of our Universe, ranging from the first galaxies to the formation of stars and planetary systems.
Size and Design: JWST is notably larger than the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), with a 6.5-meter diameter primary mirror (compared to Hubble's 2.4 meters). It is designed to be folded for launch aboard an Ariane 5 rocket.
Instruments: JWST carries four main scientific instruments:
- Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam)
- Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec)
- Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI)
- Fine Guidance Sensor/Near InfraRed Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (FGS/NIRISS)
Orbit: JWST is positioned at the second Lagrange point (L2), approximately 1.5 million kilometers (about 1 million miles) from Earth. This orbit allows JWST to maintain a stable position relative to Earth and the Sun.
Launch and Deployment: Originally planned for launch in 2018, JWST faced several delays due to technical and budgetary issues. It was finally launched on December 25, 2021, by an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana. Deployment and initial operations are ongoing as of 2024.
Capabilities: JWST's infrared capabilities allow it to observe phenomena obscured or faint in visible light, such as the formation of the first stars and galaxies, the characterization of exoplanet atmospheres, and the study of objects within our own Solar System.
International Collaboration: JWST is a collaborative project between NASA, ESA, and CSA, with each contributing different elements and instruments to the telescope.
Cost: The overall cost of JWST has been significant, estimated to be over $10 billion including development, launch, and operations.
JWST represents a major advancement in space-based astronomy, offering capabilities surpassing previous telescopes and promising groundbreaking discoveries in the years to come.
